Turning the ship or the lighthouse – Naveed Khawaja – Agile on the Beach Conference 2018

Turning the ship or the lighthouse

In this session from Agile On The Beach 2018 Naveed Khawaja looks at several techniques which have been used successfully to move enterprises from a cold start to a place where business teams have ‘caught the change’ and are proactively seeking out the Agile Transformation team about going Agile.

Within an environment of looming patent cliffs & the need to boost scientific productivity, this organization was looking to make a step change in delivery performance. But when you have a global $200m IT change portfolio, where do you start? Utilizing tailored enterprise agility, we successfully moved from a cold start to the new normal. We will share the story… Imagine you want to take your global $200m IT change portfolio Agile? The first question is where to start? This was the challenge facing a Pharmaceutical giant at the end of 2014. Within an environment of looming patent cliffs and the need to boost scientific productivity, the company was looking to make a step change in delivery performance. The Agile approach we adopted, focused specifically on organization and its cultural change to support its transition to Agile ways of working.

At the time, the transition was the largest enterprise agility adoption of its kind within a heavily regulated environment. In order for change to take root in an IT organization of over 5000 people we needed the transition to be ‘caught not taught’. Agile adoption is different from Agile transformation – we wanted a change of mindset rather than merely a change in methodology. Agile adoption at this organization has so far been extremely successful with teams reporting significantly faster time to value delivery, reduced team sizes and improved quality.
