For IT Managers: Why being a good firefighter is bad

When lean practitioner Mike Orzen informally polled attendees at a Lean IT workshop about what they thought their IT departments were good at, the replies came back — firefighting.

That’s a problem for companies and their customers, according to Orzen, a member of the faculty at the Lean Enterprises Institute and co-author of Lean IT. Instead of adding value to products and services by identifying and eliminating waste or supporting the lean transformation, IT pros are wrestling with the emergency of the moment.

“Everything we’re trying to do with lean, IT can actually accelerate or enable,” said Orzen.
